Sick Child Appointments

Pediatrics By The Sea accepts walk-in sick child visits during all open hours at both locations.

Kids, illnesses, and accidents just go together. When they’re little, they have an underdeveloped immune system and they catch everything. As they get older, their immune system matures but then they start school. Injuries run the gamut from falls in busy toddlers to sports injuries in teens. As your child’s medical home, Pediatrics By The Sea is here to help you decide when and where your child should be seen.

Please call 911/take your child to the nearest emergency room if your child is experiencing any of the following:

  • Difficulty breathing (not just noisy or congested)

    1. Extreme lethargy or difficulty staying awake

    2. Extreme irritability

    3. Dehydration

    4. Significant injury

    5. Severe pain that is not controlled by over-the-counter pain medication

    6. A temperature >100.4 rectally in an infant less than 3 months old

If your child does not require emergency care, we would be happy to see them in the office. If you are not sure if your child needs to be seen or if you can treat them at home, please ask to speak with our Advice Line medical assistant or refer to our online Is Your Child Sick? symptom checker. Generally, kids with the following symptoms should be seen in the office:

  • Fever > 3 days (or any fever in an infant less than 6 months)

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea

  • Rashes

  • Persistent pain such as stomach pain, headache, ear pain, or a sore throat

  • Any unusual symptom that lasts more than 3 days

During the visit, your child’s provider will determine if any medication or laboratory testing is needed and discuss how to make your child comfortable while they recover.
